Flexibility
Some innovative solutions allow us to take this approach, in favour of the grid and the consumer, even further. One of these is flexibility: flexibility consists of consuming electricity at the times when it is cheapest. It therefore makes it possible to optimise electricity production according to demand. In practical terms, this means it would be more cost-effective for a consumer to run their dishwasher and washing machine around midday (during peak sunshine) rather than during the evening peak hours. Thanks to flexibility, they gain greater control over their consumption and, consequently, over their bill.
A benefit for consumers and the grid
Elia Group recently published a new study entitled “The power of Flex”, demonstrating that this flexible approach to electricity consumption can indeed benefit both consumers and the electricity system.
The study also identifies three key actions to make flexibility accessible:
- Offering financial incentives to flexible consumers;
- Facilitating access to data for energy service providers;
- Standardising the norms and requirements for electrical appliances with flexible consumption.
In short, flexibility is emerging as a promising solution for transforming our approach to electricity consumption, offering benefits to both consumers and the grid.
