Energy communities: we missed the boat in 2020, today the tool exists

Looking back at the « Decarbonising an industrial park » morning held at KEYES (formerly NRB) in Liège on 3 November.

In 2020, energy communities were all the rage. Everyone was talking about them, studies multiplied, conferences too. And then, almost nothing happened.

Why? Because the laws were not yet ripe. Because the paperwork was heavy, with never-ending procedures. Because it was very hard to rally companies around an energy market of formidable complexity. The result: lots of reports, very few communities that actually work.

No matter. At RaYSun, we kept working for several years to get to something that really runs.

Today, it is a reality

Energy communities are no longer a promise. In Wallonia, 7 sharing operations are validated and operational. Six more are under way, and two more will soon reach the CWaPE authorisation stage. Across the country, here is where RaYSun stands as of 5 November 2026:

13sharing operations running in the three Regions, 5 under validation and 1 being set up
350supply points connected to a sharing operation managed by RaYSun, in 102 municipalities
5 GWhshared from January to the end of September 2026, as measured by the grid operators
17.5 GWh/yearforecast for 2027 on the contracts already signed in early November 2026

The framework is there, the operations are running, the first results are tangible. One thing was still missing.

What was missing was a tool: CE4I

When a company, a business park or a group of SMEs wonders « is it worth it for us? », the answer used to take months of study. That is exactly what CE4I changes.

CE4I simulates an energy community between companies, within a business park or an industrial zone, and gives an order of magnitude on the spot: how much energy can be shared, how much each member stands to gain, which roofs or which wind turbines make the difference. You change the participants, the production, the consumption, and the result updates before your eyes.

We presented it on 3 November at KEYES, during a morning organised by GRE-Liège and Cluster TWEED, as part of the European project EMR H2-HUBs (Interreg Meuse-Rhine). We did it with Louise Samain of Cluster TWEED, and we simulated live a community on a very real industrial park.

No more reason to wait

It was hard. But today:

Whether you are a company, a business park or a group of citizens, you can now find out in a few minutes whether an energy community makes sense for you. And if it does, RaYSun supports you in setting it up.
